Animal Farm and pampered California penguins have similar qualities in their story. In A.F. one pig managed to persuade the other animals on the farm that they were the true leaders of the farm, and was succeeded by two young boars after he passes away. The pampered California penguins met their Ohio cousins two and a half weeks before they started their… interesting journey. The six Ohio penguins somehow convinced, persuade, or “brainwash” the west coast penguins to swim around, and around in their tank. In both stories, one or six animals convinced the rest to do something worth doing, well at least worth for them to do. Another thing that they have in common is that it is very clear that for them, animals rule. Jones wanted his farm back in A.F., but the animals went to “war” with them and won. The penguins’ keeper wants them to stop, but it’s very likely they have no idea…

January 16th, 2003California penguins are living a pampered, nonchalant life style, until they met their Ohio cousins. The six Ohio penguins; three female, three males, managed to “brainwash” the forty-six west coast penguins. All fifty- two are now swimming in the pool all day long, only coming out to rest for a few minutes or to eat. They met three and a half weeks earlier, and began swimming on Christmas Eve 2002. Jane Tollini, their keeper, finds their behavior strange. Before the Ohio penguins came, they sat around in their nests with their mates until spring. It was difficult feeding them then, they prefered to be fed by eating it out of her hand, stuffing it down their throat or even calling “room service”! This is not the first time this kind of even has happened, it happened to Ian Hiler as well. It’s just something that humans have no control over, even if we want it to stop…

That pig does not understand the meaning of cooperating with the rest of us. He is not better than I but I must work with him! Why can I stand working with him? I always ask that. The simple answer is that we are working together for the benefit of the other animals. I work as hard as anyone on this farm. I study the books that Jones left behind, and work hard trying to educate the others. Couldn’t he stop and think about the things that we argue about from my point for view? No, he argues and argues with me on and on. Who was the one who wrote the

Seven Commandments? Who was it that lead the other animals into battle against Jones? I! I tell you, Napolean is a fool. It is I, Snowball, who will lead this farm into greatness.

With Jones gone, the animals were very cooperative with each other. They all worked their hardest, and were extremely pleased with the progress of the farm. Every animal but two. Mollie was self-fish, lazy, and pampered too much by the humans. She refused to work, but demanded she get as much as the others. The cat always “disapered” during work time, but always arrived on time for meals, and always had very good excuses for why she could not work. Snowball and Napolean taught the other animals how to write and read, but many were not very bright. Snowball and Napolean sent out pigeons to teach the song Beasts of England to all the animals on the neighboring farm. Soon all the animals near by were humming and singing that song so much. The humans who heard it feared it and punished the animals who they heard sing it. One day, Jones and some of his men came to the farm to show the animals who was the true master. The animals had all been waiting for this day easily triumped the “battle”, but lost a comrade, a heep whom was shot in the back by Jones.

Chapter 1 summaryMajor, a 12 year old pig, knew that he didn’t have much longer before he died, so he called all the animals on Manor Farm for a meeting. He explained to them that they have been mistreated, told them the ways that “Jones” had mistreated them, and how they have been mistreated, even when they are dead. He also sang a song called “Beasts of England”, and that song really encouraged them to pursue Major’s words. Chapter 2Three days after their secret meeting, Major passed away, and the responsibility of carrying out the plan was given to two pigs, Napoleaon and Snowball. Every night the animals would have secret meetings to make a plan to drive Mr.Jones away from the farm. Their plan finally went into action, the night that they had been unfed and broke into the bins to help themselves. Mr.Jones and all of his men came out to beat the animals, and the animals went into full throttle with their plan. The animals scared Mr.Jones and all of his men so bad that they just ran out the farm gate and down the road. After thier accomplishment, they ventured around and made sure that there was no sign of any humans anywhere on the farm. They changed the name of the farm to Aniimal Farm, and made seven commandments in which the animals were to live by.Questions:1. Utopia is a perfect society, in what way can the farm be an ideal place? The farm will be an ideal place as soon as they are all happy. There would be no humans around, and the animals would live under the order of the pigs. It was working very well in the second chapter, and maybe if none of them complain and just accept that this is the new way to live, then the farm would be utopia.2. Who is Snowball and what is he like?Snowball is a vivacious pig, quick talker and more inventive. I think that he will be the one that will be able to get the animals through all their rough patches, with the help of Napoleon’s character.3. The pigs begin leading the anmials in the 2nd chapter. Why are the animals easily lead? The animals have understood that they have all been mistreated, and have the urge to do as they please. They took Major’s words, and song, to heart and they will remind them everytime when they want to quit that they must pursue the plan. This way, the animals in the next generation will be able to have the freedom that they were born to have, and no be raised to be killed.
